The Role of Scan Kiosk

Purpose

The document is aimed to illustrate the role of scan kiosk in information system.

Scope

This document is applicable to DS-715, and DS-715V

The Roles

Scan Kiosk is used to receive the barcodes, instructions or requests from users and output the information, sound or video for users. In the information system, it can be separated in two parts, Scan Kiosk and Server.

A. Scan Kiosk

The role of Scan Kiosk is to scan barcodes or receive data from touch screen. Then send the data to back-office Server. When the data in Server is processed, receive the information, sound or video from Server and display them on screen or play by speakers. In other words, send data and receive information are all the works Scan Kiosk to do.

B. Server

The back-office Server is to receive data from Scan Kiosk and send the information to Scan Kiosk. In the Server, the Host is to process the received data from Scan Kiosk and send query to search data in Database. When the required data is searched, the Host receives the data from Database and generates the data as meaningful information. Then send the information to Scan Kiosk for displaying.

• Host

The Host could be a PC or other standalone system. The application program is installed in the Host and is responsible for communicating between Scan Kiosk and Database. The programming language for application program could be any

language that depends on System Integrator’s preference.

• Database

The Database stores large amount of raw data and is the proprietary of customer. The Database system could be any system, such as MySQL, MS Access or Oracle, depending on the customer when created.

Conclusion

In other words, Scan Kiosk is simply to input data and output information. It does not do data process.

As the applications are varied in different fields, the System Integrator will have to follow the protocol provided in SDK to do some coding for application program to meet the actual system circumstances.
